Recreational paddles are a basic part of any kayakers gear. Whether you are a beginner or experienced paddler there is some essential gear which must be considered. Safety gear, a kayak and kayaking paddles should be the first types of gear purchased.
Choosing paddles is an important part of kayaking, and several things should
be taken into account including the type of paddling you are planning on doing,
your body strength and height, and the height and width of your kayak. A good
design of recreational paddle should slice easily through the water and feel
like an extension of your natural body movements.
When looking at kayaking paddles, important
factors to consider about the actual paddle are:
length and shape of the blade and shaft, and the
material of which the paddle is constructed. Each
shape of recreation paddle has its own benefits
- for example, wider blades provide more acceleration
but greater water resistance.
For
white water paddling, a heavier paddle will be more
difficult to use, but it would be easier to use
for touring paddling where speeds are generally
slower.
Kayaking paddles are generally around 180cm in length and made of durable
woods and synthetic materials. Wooden paddles do require occasional sanding and
varnishing but they have a wonderful warm feeling both in and out of the water.
They are usually more expensive than synthetic material kayaking paddles.
Synthetic material paddles come in a wide range of costs, they usually have
aluminum or fiberglass shafts with fiberglass blades. The most inexpensive
synthetic paddles sometimes are weak and too flexible.
To find the correct length of
recreation paddle for yourself, hold the paddle over your
head with your arms at right angles to the paddle shaft. For white water rafter
you should have about 4-5 inches clearance between your hands and the blades.
For sea kayakers 10-20 inches between hands and blades is preferable. Also,
smaller people should look at the shaft's diameter, too large a diameter may
cause mild tendonitis or wrist problems. Blades are usually offset by 45 to 60
degrees to facilitate efficient paddling. This allows for more paddling power
with a wide variety of paddling strokes.
